Giphy is a GIF search engine that allows users to search for and share GIFs. Giphy wanted to promote its service through screensavers. However, it did not have the resources in-house to build a Windows-based screensaver.
Standard Beagle, which has developers with extensive experience in Microsoft .Net, was asked to take on the project.
In the first version, the screensaver and installer were developed using Inno Setup. The screensaver was written in .Net 2.0 so it would be compatible down to Windows XP, which was active at the time. The screensaver was intended to be a general feed from Giphy.
Windows Screensaver Version 2 – Artist Feed
Next, Standard Beagle built several screensavers that displayed a feed of GIFs from artists showcased on Giphy. These screensavers were also written in .Net, but they were specific to the artists that were highlighted.
Standard Beagle also used Windows Shell Scripting to develop a data driven build script, allowing Giphy developers to add a URL to a text file and generate new screensavers.
As a result of our efforts, Giphy has been able to generate new screensavers on its own in just a small amount of time. The screensavers are still featured on the Giphy website as a download option for users.
